10-min walk down Via Crescenzio. Hadrian's mausoleum (AD 139), then papal fortress, then prison. The Roman spiral ramp — funeral processions climbed this 1,900 years ago. The bastions and walkways — kids run between cannons and battlements. The Terrazza dell'Angelo at the top — best view of St. Peter's dome from outside the Vatican. Tosca jumped from here at the end of Puccini's opera. Skip the papal apartments. Out by 11:15.
